The 7 Days Machame Route is the most recommended version of the popular Whiskey Route, offering excellent acclimatization, stunning scenery, and one of the highest summit success rates on Mount Kilimanjaro. By spreading the climb over seven days, trekkers enjoy a smoother ascent profile, more rest time, and greater chances of reaching Uhuru Peak successfully.
This route is famous for its diverse landscapes—lush rainforest, volcanic ridges, alpine desert, icy glaciers—and the unforgettable challenge of climbing the Barranco Wall. With an extra acclimatization day at Karanga, this itinerary is ideal for both first-time trekkers and experienced hikers who want the safest and most enjoyable experience.
This 7-day version is widely considered the “gold standard” Machame itinerary thanks to its ideal balance between comfort, acclimatization, and adventure.

7 Days Tour Day-by-Day Itinerary
Day 1: Machame Gate to Machame Camp
The adventure begins at Machame Gate (1,800 m) with registration and final preparations. The trek starts through the thick, humid rainforest where giant trees and moss-covered rocks dominate the path. Expect monkey sightings, waterfalls, and lush plant life.
Arrive at Machame Camp (3,010 m) after a steady ascent through forest trails.
Day 2: Machame Camp to Shira Camp
Leave the rainforest behind and enter the heather and moorland zone. The trail becomes steeper as you climb up volcanic ridges. The views open widely as you approach the Shira Plateau, one of Kilimanjaro’s most iconic geological formations.
Overnight at Shira Camp (3,840 m) with spectacular sunsets and starry skies.
Day 3: Shira Camp to Lava Tower to Barranco Camp
This crucial acclimatization day follows the “climb high, sleep low” principle. Trek from Shira Plateau toward Lava Tower (4,600 m), where altitude training begins. After a break at Lava Tower, descend to Barranco Camp (3,960 m).
This descent greatly helps your body adapt and increases summit success chances.
Day 4: Barranco Camp to Karanga Camp
Start with a thrilling climb up the Barranco Wall, a steep but non-technical rock face offering breathtaking views of the valley below. Continue trekking through alpine terrain with stunning views of the Southern Icefields.
Arrive at Karanga Camp (4,035 m)—your bonus acclimatization day unique to the 7-day route.
Day 5: Karanga Camp to Barafu Camp
Climb steadily through the alpine desert zone towards Barafu Camp (4,640 m), your base before the summit push. The landscape becomes barren and rugged, with strong winds and low temperatures.
Early dinner and early rest as the summit attempt begins just after midnight.
Day 6: Barafu Camp to Uhuru Peak to Mweka Camp
Around midnight, begin the summit ascent under starlit skies. The path to Stella Point (5,756 m) is steep and physically demanding, but incredibly rewarding as you watch the sunrise from the crater rim.
Continue to Uhuru Peak (5,895 m)—the highest point in Africa.
After celebratory photos, descend back to Barafu, then continue down to Mweka Camp (3,100 m) for much-needed rest.
Day 7: Mweka Camp to Mweka Gate
Enjoy a relaxing descent through the lush rainforest, passing through ferns, flowers, and likely monkey sightings.
At Mweka Gate, receive your summit certificates before driving back to Moshi or Arusha.
