Your adventure begins with a drive to Londorossi Gate (about 2,100 m) where registration and safety briefings are completed. Afterward, a short drive leads you to the trailhead.
You start trekking through untouched rainforest, filled with birds, monkeys, moss-draped trees, and rich vegetation.
Arrive at Mti Mkubwa Camp (2,650 m) for your first night on the mountain.
Expect:
Low crowds
Lush jungle scenery
A gentle start perfect for acclimatization
Day 2: Mti Mkubwa to Shira 1 Camp
Today, the trail gradually leaves the rainforest and enters the heather and moorland zone. You will climb over ridges formed by ancient lava flows and enjoy views of the Shira Ridge.
Eventually you reach the expansive Shira Plateau, one of the most unique geological features on Kilimanjaro.
Overnight at Shira 1 Camp (3,500 m).
Expect:
Expanding views toward Kibo
Scenic valleys and ridges
Notable altitude gain that helps with acclimatization
Day 3: Shira 1 to Shira 2 Camp
A short but essential acclimatization day across the beautiful Shira Plateau. The trek is gentle and allows trekkers to adjust gradually to the increasing altitude.
Enjoy wide open views and dramatic mountain landscapes.
Arrive at Shira 2 Camp (3,840 m).
Expect:
Easy walking
Time for relaxation and acclimatization
Stunning sunset over the plateau
Day 4: Shira 2 to Lava Tower to Barranco Camp
This is one of the most important acclimatization days on the entire route.
You trek upward to Lava Tower (4,600 m) where you stop for lunch and high-altitude exposure. Afterward, descend to the lower Barranco Valley (3,960 m).
This “climb high, sleep low” approach dramatically increases your body’s ability to adapt.

Expect:
A challenging but rewarding day
Exposure to high altitude
Dramatic views of the Western Breach and Great Barranco Valley
Day 5: Barranco Camp to Karanga Camp
The day begins with the exciting climb up the Barranco Wall—a steep but non-technical scramble. From the top, trekkers enjoy amazing panoramas across the southern side of Kilimanjaro.
Continue through alpine landscapes toward Karanga Camp (4,035 m).
This short day is extremely important for proper acclimatization before heading to base camp.
Expect:
The famous Barranco Wall adventure
Spectacular glacier views
Great acclimatization day
Day 6: Karanga Camp to Barafu Camp
Today you climb gradually upward through the alpine desert until reaching Barafu Camp (4,640 m)—your base for the summit attempt.
The environment is windy, cold, and exposed, but the views are unbeatable with both Mawenzi and Kibo visible.
Early dinner and early sleep, as the summit push begins around midnight.
Expect:
Increasing winds and colder temperatures
Final briefings before summit
A night of rest before the toughest climb
Day 7: Barafu Camp to Uhuru Peak to Mweka Camp
Your summit attempt begins before midnight. You slowly climb the steep slopes toward Stella Point (5,756 m), where many trekkers witness one of the most beautiful sunrises in Africa.
Continue along the crater rim until reaching Uhuru Peak (5,895 m)—the highest point in Africa.
After celebrating and taking photos, descend back to Barafu Camp, then continue down to Mweka Camp (3,100 m) for your final night on the mountain.
